    Size : 36–39 cm; Nominate male 610–1200 (902) g, female 610–1150 (770) g;
              Race australis male 481–660 (568) g, female 476–609 (552) g, Unsexed 305–725 (511) g;
              Wingspan 70–80 cm in nominate, 56–64 cm in australis. 

    Subspecies (4) and Distribution
  • Fulica atra atra (Linnaeus, C 1758)
    – Europe, northern Africa, Azores, and Canaries east through central Asia to Japan and south to Indian Subcontinent, including Sri Lanka; winters south to western and northeastern Africa, southeastern Asia, and Philippines.
  • Fulica atra lugubris (Müller, S 1847)
    – Java (formerly?) and northwestern New Guinea.
  • Fulica atra novaeguineae (Rand, AL 1940)
    – Central New Guinea.
  • Fulica atra australis (Gould, J 1845)
    – Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. Presumably this subspecies recorded regularly in Flores and Timor-Leste (at least one breeding record on latter).
