    Subspecies (9) and Distribution

• Serilophus lunatus atrestus (Deignan, 1948, Menting, lat. 23° 33' N., long. 99° 05' E., Yunnan)
  – Central and eastern Myanmar (south of the Bhamo, east of the Irrawaddy) and southern China (southwest Yunnan) south to northeast Thailand, central and southern (lowland) Laos, and northwest Vietnam (West Tonkin).
• Identification :
  – Resembles both the nominate subspecies and rothschildi, but differs from the latter in having lores tinged rusty (not black), and the sides of head and upperparts distinctly paler and brighter.
• Serilophus lunatus elisabethae (La Touche, 1921, Hokow, S.E. Yunnan (alt. 300 ft.))
  – Southeast China (southeast Yunnan and southwest Guangxi), northern and central Vietnam; perhaps further south in Vietnam and Cambodia.
• Identification :
  – Compared to the nominate, elisabethae has the lores blackish, sides of head and ear coverts pale rusty, and rump and uppertail coverts deeper rufous.
• Serilophus lunatus polionotus (Rothschild, 1903, Mt. Wuchi, Hainan)
  – Mountains of Hainan.
• Identification :
  – Not unlike elisabethae. Subspecies polionotus has similarly black lores, but the rest of the head is pale ashy with a darker olive-brown tinge, upper back and scapulars ashy, and the darker gray breast contrasts with the paler ashy throat.
• Serilophus lunatus lunatus (Gould, 1834, in the neighborhood of Rangoon; type locality restricted to the hills of the Pegu district, Pegu Division, Burma, by Deignan, 1948)
  – Southern Myanmar (Pegu Yomas, Karen Hills, northern Tenasserim) and northwest Thailand.
• Serilophus lunatus stolidus (Robinson & Kloss, 1919, Kao Nawng, 1200-1500 feet, [ = Khao Nong, a mountain at lat. 8° 55' N., long. 99° 38' E.], Bandon, peninsular Siam)
  – Southern Tenasserim, Myanmar, and southwest Thailand (excluding southernmost Peninsular Thailand, where it is replaced by rothschildi).
• Identification :
  – Very similar to the nominate, but differs in having a more extensive and paler ash-colored forehead, deeper colored inner secondaries and tertials, and darker, more chestnut lower back and rump.
• Serilophus lunatus aphobus (Deignan, 1948, Khao Laem, a mountain of the San Kamphaeng Range, lat. 14° 25' N., long. 101° 30' E., Siam)
  – Southeast Thailand and probably adjacent Cambodia.
• Identification :
  – Similar to elisabethae and impavidus, but separable from both in having dark rusty lores and more vivid ferruginous head-sides and ear-coverts. The color of the scapulars of this taxon are said to be intermediate between those of elisabethae and impavidus.
• Serilophus lunatus impavidus (Deignan, 1948, Thateng, lat. 15° 31' N., long. 106° 22' E., Saravane Province, Bas-Laos)
  – Apparently confined to the Bolaven Plateau, in southern Laos, but neighboring lowland populations belong to either this taxon, or elisabethae.
• Identification :
  – Very similar to elisabethae and considered to be only doubtfully distinct. Deignan described this subspecies on the basis of having an ashy hue to the scapulars and upper back versus elisabethae.
• Serilophus lunatus rothschildi (E. J. O. Hartert & Butler, 1898, Gunong Ijau, 3000 feet, Perak)
  – Extreme southern Peninsular Thailand, and throughout the main range of Peninsular Malaysia.
• Identification :
  – Quite distinctive; the lores are pale ashy, head grayish without any ferruginous or brownish tinge, there is a bluish upper border to the black supercilium, more extensive bluish at bend of wing, the rufous on the upperparts extends from lower mantle to tail-coverts, and the female tends to have a broader white breast band.
• Serilophus lunatus intensus (Robinson & Kloss, 1916, Siolak Dras, 3100 feet, Korinchi [Kerintji] Valley, Sumatra)
  – Sumatra.
