Brit. Orn. Club, 36, p. 36, and inferentially further restricted to Malacca, by Chasen, 1935, Handlist Malaysian Birds, p. 227)
  – S Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, including Batu Is (off W coast).
• Macronus ptilosus trichorrhos (Temminck, 1836, Sumatra and Borneo ; restricted to 'the lowlands of Sumatra,' by Hartert, 1915, Bull. Brit. Orn. Club, 36, p. 36.)
  – Bangka I, Belitung I.
• Macronus ptilosus sordidus (Chasen, 1937, Billiton = Belitung Island, Indonesia)
  – Bangka and Belitung islands.
