Coppersmith Barbet (Western Yellow-faced) Psilopogon haemacephalus indicus/delicus

Psilopogon haemacephalus indicus (Latham, 1790, Calcutta)
– Northeast Pakistan, eastern to southern China (Yunnan), south to Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Vietnam.
Psilopogon haemacephalus delicus (Parrot, 1907, Deli, Sumatra)
– Sumatra.

Identification : – Subspecies delicus is most similar to indicus, but the former is slightly smaller (see Measurements), the tail is greener, and the gold breast band is narrower.

Coppersmith Barbet (Javan Red-faced) Psilopogon haemacephalus roseus

Psilopogon haemacephalus roseus (Dumont de Sainte Croix, 1816, No locality = Java, ex Levaillant, Ois. de Paradis, pi. 33)
– Java and Bali.

Identification : – Subspecies roseus differs from nominate haemacephalus in having the yellow in the face and throat replaced with red. It is similar to other red-faced subspecies from the Philippines, particularly cebuensis, but lacks yellow spotting in the red patches, is generally more white below without the yellowish tinge, and has a more yellow-green back

Coppersmith Barbet (Philippine Yellow-faced) Psilopogon haemacephalus [haemacephalus Group]

Psilopogon haemacephalus haemacephalus (Statius Müller, 1776, Philippine Islands)
– Luzon, Mindoro (northern Philippines).

Psilopogon haemacephalus celestinoi (Gilliard, 1949, Bonga, Samar, Philippine)
– Catanduanes, Samar, Biliran, and Leyte (east-central Philippines).

Identification : – Subspecies celestinoi is very similar to the nominate haemacephalus and to mindanensis, but is slightly longer-billed, shorter winged, and shorter tailed.

Psilopogon haemacephalus mindanensis (Rand, 1948, Todaya, alt. 2800 ft., Mount Apo, Mindanao Island)
– Mindanao (southern Philippines).

Identification : – Subspecies mindanensis differs from nominate haemacephalus in having a brighter throat, more yellow on the underparts with heavier green streaking, and deeper bluer green upperparts.

Coppersmith Barbet (Philippine Red-faced) Psilopogon haemacephalus [intermedius Group]

Psilopogon haemacephalus intermedius (Shelley, 1891, Negros and Cebu, Philippine Islands)
– Panay, Guimaras, and Negros (central Philippines).

Identification : – Subspecies intermedius differs from nominate haemacephalus in having the yellow on the face and throat replaced by red (with some yellow feather bases showing through), and more cream-yellow below.

Psilopogon haemacephalus cebuensis (Dziadosz & Parkes, 1984, Toledo, Cebu Island, Philippines)
– Cebu (central Philippines).

Identification : – Subspecies cebuensis resembles intermedius but has a broader black band on the rear of the face and crown, and more yellow mixed in the red on the crown, face, and throat.

Psilopogon haemacephalus homochroa (Dziadosz & Parkes, 1984, Badajos, Tablas Island, Philippines)
– Tablas and probably Romblon, north-central Philippines. Possibly also Masbate, although this island is geographically closer to other subspecies. Specimens examined on Guimaras included individuals resembling both intermedius and homochroa, but this island is generally assigned to intermedius.

Identification : – Subspecies homochroa resembles intermedius but is duller and more uniform in color, with more green wash in the rear black border of the face and throat, a more concolorous green back, wings, and tail, and a more diffuse gold band on the breast. Variation by season and sex makes assessment of this subspecies difficult.
