Taxonomy update for 2021

Grey-cheeked Bulbul Alophoixus bres is split into :

- Grey-cheeked Bulbul (Alophoixus tephrogenys)
- Brown-cheeked Bulbul (Alophoixus bres)
Brown-cheeked Bulbul is endemic to Java and Bali.
Grey-cheeked Bulbul occurs on Sumatra, the mainland from
Myanmar to the Malaysia Peninsula, and Borneo.

Size : 19–23 cm; 29–44 g, male 41–46 g, female 51–52 g;
unsexed 32–51 g (gutturalis)

Subspecies (2) and Distribution

Alophoixus tephrogenys tephrogenys (Jardine, W; Selby, PJ 1833, though we are uncertain of its locality, we suspect it to be Indian' ; type locality corrected to Malacca, by Hartert, 1902)
– S Myanmar, S Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia (not Singapore) and E Sumatra.
Alophoixus tephrogenys gutturalis (Bonaparte, CLJL 1850, Borneo; type specimen from Banjermasin [lat. 3° 20' S., long. 114° 35' E.])
– Borneo (except highlands).
