- Motacilla alba alba (Linnaeus, 1758)
– Breeds SE Greenland (irregular), Iceland, Faroe Is and throughout continental Europe (has bred Britain and Ireland) E to Urals, Turkey and Levant; winters in S part of range and S to W & E Africa, Arabia and SW Asia. [type locality = Sweden]; overwinters from western Europe south to central Africa and east to India; vagrant to eastern North America, where recorded in Québec (Savard 2002) and North Carolina (Bearden et al. 2004). - Motacilla alba dukhunensis (Sykes, 1832)
– Occupying the eastern portion of the range of that subspecies from C Russia (Ural Mts E to Taymyr Peninsula) S to Caucasus, NW Iran, Kyrgyz Steppes and foothills of Altai Mts; winters Middle East E to Indian Subcontinent.

- Motacilla alba lugens (Gloger, 1829)
– Breeds in eastern Siberia on the Kamchatka Peninsula and in Ussuriland as well as on Sakhalin and in northern Japan [type locality = Kamchatka, Russia]; overwinters in Japan and eastern Asia and has wandered along the Pacific Coast south to southern California (Sibley and Howell 1998, Hamilton et al. 2007).

- Motacilla alba leucopsis (Gould, 1838)
– Breeds in southeastern Russia and northeastern China to Korean Peninsula, southwestern Japan, Taiwan, and southeastern China; overwinters in southern China (including Taiwan) and through Indochina, west to northeastern India and Nepal, rarely in Japan [type locality = India]; vagrant to Australia and possibly to Oregon, where two adult males were reported as this subspecies (Nehls 2002) but were perhaps M. a. lugens (Marshall et al. 2003a, Hamilton et al. 2007).

– Includes M. a. albula Koelz, 1954. Partly resident in southern China and northern Laos, west to northern Myanmar and northeastern Pakistan [type locality = Nepal]; some overwinter south to northern India, Bangladesh, northern Thailand, and northern Vietnam.
