- Pandion haliaetus haliaetus (Linnaeus, 1758)
– From Britain and Scandinavia east to Kamchatka and Japan, and south to Mediterranean, Red Sea, central China and Taiwan, also Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands; overwinters mainly sub-Saharan Africa (south to South Africa, where occasionally claimed to breed (Tarboton 2001), India, western Indonesia, and Philippines.

- Pandion haliaetus carolinensis (Gmelin, 1788)
– Alaska east across southern Canada to Labrador, and south in United States to California and patchily to northern Arizona and Florida, also northwestern Mexico (Baja California), and has bred Cuba (Garrido and Kirkconnell 2000); overwinters in Caribbean, Central America, and South America (south to Chile and central Argentina (Saggese et al. 2014); has occurred as a vagrant to Iceland and the Azores (Strandberg 2013).
