Golden-throated Barbet (Psilopogon franklinii) populations from southern Vietnam and a small corner of adjacent Laos are recognized as a distinct species Necklaced Barbet (Psilopogon auricularis). :

- Psilopogon franklinii franklinii (Blyth, 1842, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India)
– Central Nepal east along Himalayan slopes to northern Myanmar and southern China (southeastern Tibet, western and southern Yunnan, southwestern Guangxi), south to southeast Bangladesh, eastern Myanmar, northern Thailand, northern Laos and North Vietnam.

- Psilopogon franklinii ramsayi (Walden, 1875, 2000-4000 feet, Karenni Hills)
– Central Myanmar and northwestern Thailand (Chiang Mai Province) south through the Malay Peninsula. - Identification :
– Differs from the nominate in having the ear coverts and front of superciliary mostly white or grayish, bordered with black, particularly on the lores and behind the eye. As a result, generally appears "fuzzier," without the stark, contrasting black eye stripe of the nominate.
