- Zapornia fusca erythrothorax (Temminck & Schlegel, 1849)
– Russian Far East, Korea, Japan, and E & S China; N populations winter to S. - Zapornia fusca phaeopyga (Stejneger, 1887)
– Ryukyu Is; birds from Taiwan sometimes assigned to this race. - Zapornia fusca zeylonica (E. C. S. Baker, 1927)
– W India and Sri Lanka. - Zapornia fusca bakeri (E. J. O. Hartert, 1917)
– Pakistan and N India E to SC China (SW Sichuan, SW Yunnan) and Indochina. - Zapornia fusca fusca (Linnaeus, 1766)
– Philippines and Malay Peninsula to Greater Sundas (in Borneo, mainly in E), Sulawesi and Lesser Sundas (Bali, Sumba, Flores).
