Taxonomy update for 2021
In IOC World Bird List Version 11.2 (released in July 2021), the IOC
World Bird List split the fairy-bluebird genus (Irena) to recognize
three distinct species instead of one broad complex.

The three recognized species are :


    -  Asian Fairy-bluebird (Irena puella)
       RANGE: Found across tropical South Asia, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula,
                      and the Greater Sundas (Sumatra, Borneo, Java).
    -  Palawan Fairy-bluebird (Irena tweeddalii)
       RANGE: Endemic to the Palawan island group in the western Philippines.
    -  Philippine Fairy-bluebird (Irena cyanogastra)
       RANGE: The other major endemic species spanning the rest of the Philippine
                      archipelago.

    Size : 21.2–25.8 cm; male 56.6–75.7 g, female 52–71.2 g (malayensis), 56 g (crinigera)

    Subspecies (5) and Distribution
  • Irena puella puella (Latham, 1790, India = Travancore)
    – India to Myanmar, Thailand, and Mainland Southeast Asia, including the northern Malay Peninsula.
  • Irena puella andamanica (Abdulali, 1964, Long Island, Middle Andamans [= Long Island, Middle Andaman Island.])
    – Andaman Islands.
    • Identification :
      – Subspecies andamanica differs from nominate by heavy bill, broader and marginally deeper than in any other subspecies.
  • Irena puella malayensis (F. Moore, 1854, Malacca)
    – Southern Malay Peninsula.
    • Identification :
      – Subspecies malayensis resembles nominate, but tail coverts longer.
  • Irena puella crinigera (Sharpe, 1877, Borneo)
    – Sumatra (including islands off west coast), Bangka, Belitung, and Borneo.
    • Identification :
      – Subspecies criniger is smallest, tail coverts completely encase tail, above and below, to slightly beyond its tip.
  • Irena puella turcosa (Walden, 1870,  Java)
    – Java.
    • Identification :
      – Subspecies turcosa has tail coverts as previous, but averages slightly larger.
