- Microtarsus melanocephalos melanocephalos (Gmelin, JF 1788, Sandwich Islands, error; type locality corrected to Sumatra, by Oberholser, 1912)
– Eastern Bangladesh (Sylhet and Chittagongs), northeastern India (south of Brahmaputra River, to northern Cachar and Manipur), Myanmar (except northern) and southern China (southwestern Yunnan) south to southern Thailand, southwestern Cambodia, southern Laos, southern Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia and Greater Sundas, and western Philippines (Calauit, Dumaran, Palawan). - Microtarsus melanocephalos hyperemnus (Oberholser, HC 1912, Simalur, West Sumatran Islands)
– Western Sumatran islands (Simeulue, Nias, Mentawai Islands). - Microtarsus melanocephalos baweanus (Finsch, FHO 1901, Bawean Island, Java Sea)
– Bawean Island (north of Java). - Microtarsus melanocephalos hodiernus (Bangs, O; Peters, JL 1927, Maratua Island [lat. 2° 15' N., long. 118° 35' E.], Celebes Sea)
