Taxonomy update for 2023
Nicobar Hooded Pitta (Pitta abbotti), Minahasa Hooded Pitta (Pitta forsteni),
Eastern Hooded Pitta (Pitta novaeguineae), Biak Hooded Pitta (Pitta rosenbergii),
and Western Hooded Pitta (Pitta sordida) are split from Hooded Pitta (Pitta sordida).
Vocal differences and plumage differences have supported genetics for this round
of splits. Note that the cucullata subspecies of Western Hooded Pitta is migratory
and has even reached Australia, so should be considered as one that could
overlap with one of the resident forms. :
Eastern Hooded Pitta (Pitta novaeguineae), Biak Hooded Pitta (Pitta rosenbergii),
and Western Hooded Pitta (Pitta sordida) are split from Hooded Pitta (Pitta sordida).
Vocal differences and plumage differences have supported genetics for this round
of splits. Note that the cucullata subspecies of Western Hooded Pitta is migratory
and has even reached Australia, so should be considered as one that could
