Size : 26.5–29.5 cm;
Male 85–88 g (smyrnensis), 76–87 g (fusca), Female 110 g (smyrnensis),
Both sexes 66·5–81 g (perpulchra)

- Halcyon smyrnensis smyrnensis (Linnaeus, 1758)
– W & S Turkey S to NE Egypt, and from C Iraq E to Pakistan, extreme NE Afghanistan and NW India. - Halcyon smyrnensis fusca (Boddaert, 1783)
– India from Uttarakhand to West Bengal and S through W part of peninsula to Sri Lanka. - Halcyon smyrnensis perpulchra (Madarász, 1904)
– E India to Bangladesh, Myanmar and Indochina, S to Sumatra and W Java. - Halcyon smyrnensis saturatior (A. O. Hume, 1874)

– S & E China and islands of Matsu and Kinmen (off Fujian).
