Taxonomy update for 2013
Asian Drongo-Cuckoo (Surniculus lugubris) is split into three species.
This was one of the more difficult splits to implement and we strongly encourage yo to check your records (all records were changed to one of these species). Recent authorities agree in general with this split
(Rasmussen and Anderton 2005, Payne 2005, Erritzøe et al. 2012),
but differ on the details of the composition of each newly recognized
species. Our arrangement follows Erritzøe et al. (2012), but note that
the taxonomy, and distributions, of these taxa remain poorly known. Moluccan Drongo-Cuckoo is restricted to the Moluccan archipelago,
but Square-tailed and Fork-tailed overlap broadly. Fork-tailed appears
to predominate on the Indian subcontinent while Square-tailed is
more prevalent in the Himalayas; both species overlap in the foothills
of northeastern India and in southern China, but those in most
of Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are all Square-tailed. In 2014,
eBird will implement a Fork-tailed/Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo that
will allow for more conservative reporting of these very similar species. :
- Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo (Surniculus lugubris)
- Fork-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo (Surniculus dicruroides)
- Moluccan Drongo-Cuckoo (Surniculus musschenbroeki)
